Maynard Haddad, the owner of H&H Car Wash and Coffee Shop, died on Thursday.
He was 88 years old.
Haddad ran the iconic El Paso coffee shop near Downtown for 63 years.
His widow, Anita Haddad, said funeral arrangements are pending.
Haddad closed the El Paso landmark in July 2021, simply saying, “it’s time,” noting his desire to spend more time with his family.
Haddad, a popular figure and huge UTEP athletics supporter, was best known for spending mornings in front of the coffee shop, nursing a thick cigar in his wooden rocking chair. He would cheerfully greet friends and customers who would stop by for pancakes or his famous chile colorado plate.
Haddad was also known for his generosity, community spirit and strong opinions on sports, politics and life.
His customers came from all walks of life, including politicians, musicians, journalists and colorful personalities from across the country.
H&H was a favorite of George W. Bush, his family and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Church of St. Clement, 810 N. Campbell.
