Doctors of the World USA has partnered with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso to launch the Border Health Program, which includes a clinic that provides basic transitional and emergency health care to migrants and asylum seekers in the El Paso area. Customs and Border Protection recorded 557 Southwest border deaths in 2021, with dehydration, heat-related risks, exposure to respiratory infections, malnutrition and not being vaccinated among the common health issues faced by migrants. The Border Health Program also assists with more immediate emergencies, such as sexual assault injuries and severe sprains from the journey. TTUHSC El Paso medical residents also provide care in the clinic, while Foster School of Medicine and Hunt School of Nursing students assist with intake and triage.
