What were El Pasoans cooking and eating 100 years ago? How do you make a War Cake? And exactly how slow is a slow oven?
A new book answers some of those questions. Titled “El Paso’s Recipes from the Past for the Present,” and compiled by author Joseph Longo, the cookbook features more than 180 pages of recipes, cooking tips and historical notes that make you want to take them for a spin.
On the March 25 broadcast of “The El Paso History Radio Show,” host Andrew J. Polk talks with Longo. He’ll also get details on the exhibit, “What They Created: The Women Behind the First Community El Paso Cookbooks and Their Recipes,” now at the Magoffin Home State Historic Site.
Also, special guest Raul Gonzalez, better known as Chef Rulis with Rulis restaurant, will share his experiences with cooking historic recipes, and the tricks that can make them work.
