Tom Fenton, Publisher

Tom Fenton is editor and publisher of El Paso Inc. and president of Investor Publications, the parent company. Tom and his wife Ellie hold controlling interest in Investor Publications, a Texas C corporation. Before launching El Paso Inc. in 1995, Fenton worked for the Freedom Forum as its Zurich based European director and also as the European representative for the Media Studies Center at Columbia University. Fenton joined the Freedom Forum in Europe after nearly seven years as editor and publisher of the Gannett owned daily El Paso Times, a stint that included five years as president of the joint operating agency that published the Times and the Scripps-Howard Herald-Post. Before taking over the El Paso Times, Fenton spent nearly 15 years as an editor, foreign correspondent and bureau chief for the Associated Press. When he resigned from the AP in 1986, he was chief of bureau in Frankfurt, Germany – in charge of AP’s largest overseas bureau. His responsibilities included news and photo coverage as well as business operations in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and the former Yugoslavia. As a journalist for AP his bylines appeared from some 35 countries. Prominent international stories that he has covered as a journalist include the Nicaraguan civil war, political strife in Central America, the Jonestown massacre and the Falklands War. Fenton has a master’s degree in international journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of the Americas in Mexico City. He was trained in Spanish, Portuguese and German. He is active in El Paso affairs and sits on a number of civic and charitable boards.
