Five years ago, a star was born.

Chico the Chihuahua came to life on April 14, 2014, becoming the El Paso Chihuahuas Triple A baseball team’s mascot and community ambassador.

But not everyone around him saw him as a shinning star at first: He was a little rough around the edges, had scars on his face and a rip in his ear – and most of all, was given a name that made many cringe.

Today, the 7-foot tall, furry, big-eyed pup with a spike collar has won over the hearts of many with his fun-loving, hard-working and fiercely loyal demeanor.

Aside from supporting his team on the field, Chico spends his days visiting schools, encouraging students to read, to play outdoors and be active, and not to bully others.

He makes appearances at birthday parties, company outings, parades and many organizations that help the community of El Paso.

The El Paso Inc. recently caught up with Chico, and here’s what he had to say about the life of a famous dog:

Q: It’s your 5th birthday this season! How will you celebrate?

At Southwest University Park of course! With lots of hot dogs, popcorn and most importantly… THE CAKE!

Q. What’s your favorite kind of cake? (Or do you only eat, er, dog food?)

I love all kinds of cake but my favorite is peanut butter cake with dog treats on top!

Q: What kind of piñata would you like to have at your party?

A baseball! So when I hit it, it looks like I am hitting a homerun!

Q: What advice do you have for other dogs/pets who want to become famous team mascots?

Be creative, be brave, be kind and have fun!

Q: Your sister team the El Paso Locomotive FC will have a mascot, possibly later this summer. How will you welcome the mascot to El Paso and Southwest University Park?

I want to throw the new mascot the best party El Paso has ever seen with hot dogs and popcorn and hopefully a Locomotive win.

Q: Many kids come to see you (and the team) every year. What do you love most about young fans and why?

I love how loyal all of ours fans are! They are here every night cheering our team to victory.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

I am excited to see all the fans, great firework shows, fun theme nights, another winning season and all the hot dogs I can eat!
