The Socorro Independent School District will open its newest campus, Cactus Trails Elementary School, on July 29, the first day of school for the 2019-20 school year.

The school’s mascot will be the Diamondbacks and its colors will be teal, grey and white.

“It’s a pretty cool sight to see it rising from the ground up,” said Leslie Thomas, who will be principal at Cactus Trails. “Opening a new campus will be a first for me, much like all the students who will be attending our new school. It’s like I am a kid all over again on my first day of school. It’s amazing.”

More than 800 elementary students from Pre-K to 5th grade are expected to enroll at the district’s new elementary school. It will serve the rapidly expanding east side of Team SISD and alleviate James P. Butler Elementary School.

The $28.4 million facility, located at 14701 Ralph Seitsinger Dr., is being built as part of the Bond 2017 program.

It has been designed similar to Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary and Purple Heart Elementary with an open-area concept for collaborative teaching and learning. Cactus Trails Elementary will have 10 additional classrooms to serve as a Pre-K hub school for students from James P. Butler and Cactus Trails.

“The atmosphere will be perfect for learning,” Thomas said. “It will be ready to offer students endless opportunities to succeed.”
