Bond 2017 moving forward with new school, high school improvements

SISD’s newest campus Cactus Trails Elementary School is now under construction. The campus in Far East El Paso is scheduled to open for the 2019-2020 school year ready to welcome students in grades Pre-K through fifth. Leslie Thomas, formerly the principal of Jane A. Hambric School, will be the principal. The mascot will be diamondbacks and the school colors will be gray, teal and white.

Improvements at Montwood, El Dorado and Americas high schools are advancing with design plans being refined. In the fall, meetings with the project architects and school stakeholders were conducted at El Dorado and Americas so that students, parents and staff could share feedback about what they would like incorporated in the designs. The schools will receive renovations in their science labs, classrooms and cafeterias, additions to fine arts and career and technical education facilities, and lighting on the baseball and softball fields.

The design for the new support services and technology addition is complete and construction will start in the summer. The facility will house the district’s Network Operations Center (NOC) and will have conference rooms for district/public meetings and events. Other projects moving into the construction phase this summer are the 16 elementary school auxiliary gyms. The state-of-the-art facilities will feature an entrance with a canopy, a foyer, storage room, and an office.

The Socorro High School reconstruction project is in the design development stage. District officials continue to work with architects, the construction manager, design team, and the City of Socorro to finalize the design. The SISD operations team also has met with personnel from the health professions academy, early college program, fine arts, child nutrition services, athletics, and special education to discuss detailed designs to serve their programs in the new facility.

“We are committed to our bond motto of Promises Made, Promises Kept. We intend to stay on time and within budget,” said Tony Ayub, SISD board secretary. “We have a great staff and we are confident that we will deliver our promises in Bond 2017.”
