Twelve schools at the Ysleta Independent School year kicked off the 2017-18 academic year under different leadership, as district officials appointed new principals over the summer at two high schools, three middle schools, and seven elementary schools.


Veronica Frias

Veronica Frias

Veronica Frias, former assistant principal at Pasodale Elementary School, is the new principal at Lancaster Elementary School. She replaces former principal Dolores Acosta, who is now principal at Cedar Grove Elementary School. Frias has been an educator for 19 years in YISD, beginning as a fifth-grade teacher at South Loop Elementary School. She holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from UTEP.

Claudia Poblano

Claudia Poblano

Former Edgemere Elementary School assistant principal Claudia Poblano is the new principal at Del Norte Elementary School, a position that became vacant when former principal Wendy Banegas was appointed principal at Presa Elementary School. Poblano is in her 10th year at YISD, and began her career in education as a pre-K teacher. Poblano earned a bachelor’s degree from UTEP and a master’s degree from Grand Canyon University.

Former Presa Elementary School Principal Rosa Lujan is now principal at South Loop Elementary School.

Natalie Alvarez

Natalie Alvarez

Natalie Alvarez, former assistant principal at Parkland Elementary School, is the new principal at Marian Manor Elementary School. Alvarez is in her 11th year at YISD; she holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from UTEP.

James McIntyre

James McIntyre

Former assistant principal at Constance Hulbert Elementary School James McIntyre has been promoted to principal of the school after 13 years at YISD. He began his career as a fifth-grade teacher, and served as an assistant principal at Ysleta Elementary School and Valley View Middle School. He earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from UTEP.

David Gonzalez

David Gonzalez

David Gonzalez, former assistant principal in the Clint Independent School District, is the new principal at Ysleta Middle School. He began teaching in 2003 at Parkland High School, and went on to work at Riverside High School before moving to CISD. He holds a bachelor’s degree from UTEP, and a master’s degree from Sul Ross University.

Alex Armendariz

Alejandro “Alex” Armendariz, current Bel Air Middle School assistant principal, is the new principal at Valley View Middle School. Armendariz began his professional career in 1999 as a middle-school science teacher, and has since worked as a support teacher and assistant principal. He holds a bachelor’s degree from UTEP and a master’s degree from Sul Ross State University.

PENELOPE BANKSTON

Armendariz replaces Penelope Bankston, who is now the new principal at Parkland High School. Bankston began her professional career as an elementary school bilingual teacher, and has since served as a middle school and high school teacher, instructional specialist, assistant principal, and principal. She holds a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees from Sul Ross State University.

DAVID BOATRIGHT

DAVID BOATRIGHT

David Boatright, former Eastwood Middle School principal, is the new principal at Eastwood High School. He began his career in education in 1991 as a physical education teacher, and has since served as a world history teacher, world geography teacher, wrestling coach, assistant principal, and principal. Boatright holds a bachelor’s degree from UTEP and a master’s degree from Sul Ross State University.

Sarah Venegas

Sarah Venegas

Heading up Eastwood Middle School this year is new principal Sarah Venegas, a former Title I instructional coordinator at the El Paso Independent School District. She began her 17-year career in education as a third-grade teacher, and has also worked as a middle-school facilitator, instructional coordinator, and assistant principal. Venegas holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from UTEP.
