A bill to name El Paso’s new federal courthouse in honor of late Judge Albert Armendariz is headed for a vote in the U.S. House. The bill by Rep. Silvestre Reyes was approved by a House committee last week. Now the bill must pass the Senate.
Armendariz, who practiced law for 57 years in El Paso, is best known for his civil rights advocacy that helped change the landscape for Latinos nationwide. He died in 2007.
“This is a fitting tribute to man who came from humble beginnings right here in El Paso to become one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders,” said Reyes.
Among his many accomplishments, Armendariz helped argue a landmark case, Hernandez v. the State of Texas, in front of the United States Supreme Court.
