El Paso Inc. reporter wins national journalism award

El Paso Inc. is proud to announce that the Society of Professional Journalists has awarded El Paso Inc. reporter Timothy Roberts its Sigma Delta Chi award for his coverage of the impact of the violence in Juárez.
Roberts won the national award for in-depth stories reported from Juarez throughout 2009, including an attempt to rebuild the Juárez police force, and the abandonment of a housing project that was supposed to be a model for the future.
Roberts won in the category of non-deadline reporting at a non-daily publication. Other national award winners included the Seattle Times, The New York Times and the Boston Globe. The national award is given to newspapers, wire services and Internet publications, and radio and TV.
Judges chose the winners from over 1,300 entries in categories covering print, radio, television and online, according to the announcement issued by the society. The awards recognize outstanding work published or broadcast in 2009.
This year’s awards will be presented Oct. 2 during the 2010 SPJ Convention and National Journalism Conference in Las Vegas.
