Cruise the Adriatic in 2009 By William Tomicki 11/9/2008
Elegant Cruises & Tours, a niche line specializing in culturally enriching cruise tours throughout Europe, offers new and exciting one-way sailings in the Adriatic for the M/S Andrea.
The ship departs from either Venice, Italy and sails to Dubrovnik, Croatia, or does the reverse, departing from Dubrovnik and sailing to Venice.
Passengers will visit nine splendid Adriatic ports of call during the 11-day/10-night voyage to the “Lands of the Adriatic,” with overnights in key destinations, including the two departure cities, Venice and Dubrovnik.
This year, Elegant Cruises & Tours will offer 11-day/10-night voyages, round-trip, Venice-Venice on the Andrea.
Next August, the new one-way sailings will be launched.
“The Adriatic region is rich in historical significance and cultural treasures and is best enjoyed at a pace that allows time to absorb the beauty, the centuries of architecture and the charming friendliness of its people,” said Capt. Mato Stanovic, founder of Elegant Cruises & Tours, and a native of Dubrovnik.
“Our new one-way itineraries are in response to comments from our passengers stating they would like to experience more of this beautiful coastline.”
The one-way voyages give passengers more time in key ports, with a total of five overnights sailing from Venice to Dubrovnik, and six on the Dubrovnik to Venice voyage. Because of the Andrea’s size, the ship is able to dock downtown in most cities, often within walking distance of restaurants, museums, shopping and other attractions.
Moreover, as a Croatian-owned-and-operated company and ship, Elegant Cruises & Tours and the Andrea staff know the region intimately. They deliver a complete Adriatic experience onboard with regional cuisine and entertainment.
The 104-passenger Andrea is known for plying the waterways of Europe, stopping at little-known ports and islands to introduce cruise passenger to Europe’s less frequented destinations.
The new one-way Venice-Dubrovnik/Dubrovnik-Venice itineraries fulfill that expectation by introducing Ploce, Croatia for access to Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina; as well as Kotor, Montenegro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and ancient Butrint, Albania, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Other Adriatic ports visited are Zadar, Croatia; Split, Croatia with overnight, and the island of Korcula, also with overnight.
Both itineraries include an overnight in Venice and two overnights in the breath-taking medieval city of Dubrovnik, another designated World Heritage Site.
The first Venice to Dubrovnik departure is Aug. 7, 2009. The inaugural Dubrovnik to Venice voyage departs August 17.
Cruise-only rates begin at $3,495 per person, based on double occupancy, with house wines and beer complimentary at lunch and dinner aboard the Andrea.
