Festival news
The Plaza Classic Film Festival got a great review in the Chicago Sun-Times.
Reporter Laura Emerick wrote a long and complimentary piece about the size, scope and attendance at the festival, and couldn’t say enough about the beautifully restored Plaza Theatre.
Emerick wrote that she’s already planning to attend next year’s festival, set for Aug. 4-14, 2011. Mark your calendars!
Old news
A TV production company will be in Texas this fall, shooting a series about archaeological discoveries.
They want to hear from people who believe they’ve discovered objects or uncovered sites of historical, cultural or scientific importance on the ranch, backyard or study site
Even though they’re not saying where it will be shown, the company says it’s produced programs for networks like PBS, History Channel and National Geographic.
So if you found something strange in your backyard, e-mail archaeologyshow@yahoo.com.
Moving months
Tom Lea Month has been held in July, the month the nationally renowned artist was born in El Paso way back in 1907.
But starting next year, all the events will move to October, which is a very busy month in El Paso.
Not only will it be cooler, but there will be more people around to attend. And you know what they say: If you want to get something done, ask a busy person to attend.
Smelter news
The new issue of Password, the quarterly journal published by the El Paso County Historical Society, is all about the good, bad and ugly of Asarco.
An article about its founding is written by Mardee de Wetter. A long piece about Smeltertown is by Prof. Monica Perales, whose family lived there. Former Asarco supervisor Hamilton Underwood tells the smelter’s history and tales of working there. And biology professor Richard Worthington explains why nothing will grow there.
Check your calendar
