Tomas Gutierrez of El Paso died on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at the age 56, after a long but heroic fight with cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends the last weeks of his life.
He graduated from Bel Air High School in 1978 and attended UTEP. Tomas worked as a structural steel estimator and project manager, and later opened Gutierrez Lawn & Garden, the happiest time of his work life.
He dedicated himself to his boys and their endeavors, including baseball, marching, symphonic and jazz band competitions, performances, mariachi and martial arts. He served the band boosters for Montwood High School and Hanks High School marching bands and was a member of United El Paso Lions, formerly Skyline Lions.
A unique and kindhearted soul, Tomas loved his wife and boys, and he was loyal fan to his Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Celtics. He loved reminiscing with his friends and will be greatly missed.
Tomas is survived by his wife Erminda (Mindy) Gutierrez, sons Nicholas R. Gutierrez and Michael T. Acosta, parents Roman and Victoria Gutierrez, siblings Oscar Gutierrez and Lupita Meza, and many nephews and nieces.
A funeral Mass was held Feb. 24 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, with a graveside service at Evergreen East. Honey, your milk and cookies will be waiting for you when you reach heaven.
