GECU President and CEO Crystal Long is the recipient of the 2019 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement. This prestigious award is the highest honor awarded in the credit union industry. The National Credit Union Foundation gives this award to individuals who embody the credit union philosophy of people helping people. Long is the recipient of this award along with Diana Dystra, president and CEO of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues.

Long started her career at GECU and worked her way up to management positions at the branch and regional levels. Her experience led her to become the vice president of consumer and mortgage lending and vice president of remote services. She became the executive vice president/COO and was promoted to president and CEO in 2011. Under Long’s leadership, GECU has grown significantly to more than 385,000 members, making it the largest locally owned financial institution in El Paso. She continuously works to impact and elevate the community by bringing financial education to the entire borderland.

Long participates in several roles for organizations at local, state and national levels. She is a member of the World Council of Credit Unions Foundation Board of Directors, a trustee for the Cornerstone Credit Union League Foundation and serves on the Texas Governmental Affairs Subcommittee to name a few. She also earned her Credit Union Development Educator Certification from the NCUF and promotes the education and application of credit union business principles and philosophies. In addition to being part of these national and international organizations, she is also active in several local professional and community organizations. Long was also named a UTEP Distinguished Alumni and received the Women of Impact award from El Paso Inc.

“In our fast-paced world, it’s so important to take the time to celebrate those in our movement who have gone above and beyond to embody the credit union difference; these awardees truly embody dedication to promoting the credit union philosophy. They have created innovative concepts, and provided leadership that has had significant, lasting and measurable impact on the credit union movement. We cannot wait to celebrate and honor them at the 2019 Herb Wegner Memorial Awards,” said NCUF Executive Director Gigi Hyland.

Long will be receiving the prestigious award in Washington, D.C., at the annual fundraising gala hosted by the NCUF on March 11, 2019, and a reception will be held in her honor to celebrate her accomplishments in the industry. Long will be the third president and CEO of GECU to receive this award, preserving an incredible legacy and quality leadership at the credit union. Long attributes her successes to four key factors: service, opportunity, education and a valuable mentorship with Harriet May, president emerita of GECU.

“We have a strong focus on elevating our community and our GECU team dedicates each day to work toward this goal. I appreciate the recognition I have received by the NCUF because it’s a true reflection of the dedication and passion that our GECU employees exude each day to accomplish great things in our community,” said Crystal Long, president and CEO of GECU.
