Faculty at Texas Tech El Paso’s Paul L. Foster School of Medicine were honored Oct. 24 during the annual Faculty Recognition Banquet at the El Paso Convention Center.
The event was called “40 Years of Brilliance” to mark the four decades that Texas Tech has educated medical students in El Paso, from 1973 to 2013.
Jose Manuel de la Rosa, M.D., founding dean of the Foster school and vice president, health affairs, presented Dean’s Awards in five categories and Faculty of the Year Awards.
Dean’s Awards went to: Albert Cuetter, M.D., neurology, Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award; Alok K. Dwivedi, Ph.D., biomedical sciences, Dean’s Young Investigator Award; Zeina Nahleh, M.D., internal medicine, Dean’s Excellence in Research Award; Kanchan Pema, M.D., internal medicine, Dean’s Distinguished Service Award; and Curt Pfarr, Ph.D., medical education, Dean’s Innovation in Medical Education Award.
Tenure and promotion honorees recognized included: Amr Abdelgawad, M.D., orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation, to associate professor; Martine Coue, Ph.D., medical education, to professor; Cecilia DeVargas, M.D., psychiatry, to associate professor; Janet Piskurich, Ph.D., medical education, to professor; Jun Zhang, Ph.D., anesthesiology, to associate professor and granted tenure; Laxman Gangwani, Ph.D., biomedical sciences, granted tenure; and Mintao Zeng, Ph.D., biomedical sciences, granted tenure.
The Faculty of the Year award went to Lorenzo Aragon, M.D., and the Community Faculty of the Year Award went to Rodrigo Ceballos, M.D., both in family and community medicine.
