Have you noticed how furs of all kinds have been gradually gracing the fashion scene for the last few years?

Now furs are making an all-out major style statement and coming on strong.

We're not just talking fabulous fur jackets and cozy fur coats, but also on-trend accessories such as fur scarves, fur trim on handbags and shoes, and most of all this year, fur vests.

Why furs and why now? Fur as a material evokes glamour and prestige and old-world luxury. Dressing up, not dressing down is hip right now.

Meanwhile, fashion today is in a retro phase, celebrating styles that look back to the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Young and young-at-heart fashionable consumers want ladylike retro looks with a new twist. Fur delivers on all these trends.

Why now? New technology and new construction techniques have totally transformed traditional fur designs.

Light textures and interesting cuts make a piece unique, fresh and of-the-moment. Furs mixed with knits or woven fabrics are no more expensive than great sportswear jackets.

To wit, one of fall's best sellers at Tres Mariposas is a rex fur vest with sweater trim that sells for $355.

Furs are being used in so many light sportswear pieces that a woman buying a fur vest as part of a fashionable look doesn't really stop and think, "I'm buying a fur." Instead, she's just buying a great look.

Traditional fur garments have become less popular. For instance, that heavy 20-year-old fur coat in your closet? Take it out and make it part of a retro look for your hike into the North Woods. Or give it to your daughter for a funky vintage look. That tired old fur is nothing like the furs of today.

Furs have changed from winter coat to fashion statement.

How do you wear furs? One of the most popular ways today is the fur vest with jeans and boots. Nothing stuffy about that. Or wrap a soft fur boa around your neck.

If you like fur and you haven't taken a look at furs lately, you owe it to yourself to check out the latest styles!
