The UTEP men’s basketball team will have three weeks of practice under its belt, and the women’s team nearly five, when the curtain is raised on the new season this Saturday.
For as little as $8, you can catch both teams in action during an exhibition doubleheader at the Don Haskins Center. The women take on St. Mary’s, Texas, at 4:30 pm, and the men face Southeastern Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
Tickets in the upper reserved section are $8, and all other seats are $10. This is a great opportunity to watch two games for the price of one.
Individual tickets go on sale Thursday, Nov. 1, at (915) 747-5234, or you can purchase season tickets now at 747-6150.
Don’t forget, the regular season openers for both squads are just a week later in “The Don.” The men battle Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, a team that posted 27 wins last season and is a preseason pick for the 2013 NCAA Tournament. It will be “80’s Night” in the Haskins Center and the Miners will wear retro uniforms.
The women square off against Loyola Marymount at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. After you check out this year’s squad, head over to the Sun Bowl for the football game versus UCF at 5 p.m. It’s “Military Night,” and we will be saluting our fine men and women in uniform.
We also have a “Take a Kid to the Game” special in place. Fans can purchase one adult ticket in the bronze or general admission areas and receive one free youth ticket, for ages 3-12, in the same section.
There are only two home games remaining for the 2012 season, including a match up with Rice at 5 p.m. Nov. 24.
UTEP hosts the Conference USA women’s soccer championship this week at University Field. Quarterfinal games are played on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m., and 1:30, 4:30 and 7 p.m. The semifinals are Friday, Nov. 2, at 4:30 and 7 p.m., with the championship game at noon Sunday, Nov. 4.
All-session passes are $10 and single day passes are $5. UTEP students are admitted free with a valid university ID. To purchase tickets, call 747-5234.
In the hunt
Our volleyball team remains in the thick of the hunt for a bid to the Conference USA tournament. Only eight of the league’s 12 teams earn a spot in the tourney Nov. 16-18 in Tulsa.
As I write this column the Miners are 6-5 in the league and in sixth place. We have a couple of crucial home matches this weekend. At 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, SMU comes to Memorial Gym. And at noon on Sunday, Nov. 4, league-leading Tulsa visits. We have a very good team this year and they have been tough to beat at home, so I hope you’ll come take a look!
As always, thanks for your support. Go, Miners!
