The UTEP football team’s season opener against Oklahoma is just a few weeks away!

We’re excited about bringing the fourth-ranked Sooners to the Sun Bowl.

We’re also excited about unveiling our new Miner Gameday Zone in the center of campus.

The zone provides an area for fans to tailgate before the game while enjoying live music and family fun.

Last week, we were also pleased to announce that the El Paso New Car Dealers Association has joined forces with GECU and the Miner IMG Sports Network to offer three lucky fans a chance to win a $30,000 new car at the OU game.

It’s all part of the New Car Dealer Association Cachetown Challenge. There are three ways to win:

• Download the free Cachetown app, available only on Android devices. Go online to www.googleplay.com and search Cachetown, or text Cachetown to 22828. Find the virtual reality keys, located at all participating New Car Dealer Association locations and GECU ATMs. For the full list, visit www.utepathletics.com. Collect multiple keys to increase your chances of winning. Contestant will be selected Aug. 29.

• Test drive any new or used car at participating New Car Dealer Association locations. Fill out a registration form to be entered into the random drawing. Contestant will be selected Aug. 29.

• Attend the UTEP game against Oklahoma on Sept. 1, which starts at 8:30 p.m. One fan will be randomly selected to kick field goals at halftime.

Fans can collect one key per day at participating locations. Each of the three contestants must make field goals from 20, 30 and 45 yards to win the new car. For more information, contact Bea Lich at (915) 747-8426.

Fan appreciation

Don’t forget, this Saturday, Aug. 18, we’re holding our annual Football Fan Appreciation Day and State Farm Miner Powder Puff Expo and Lunch in the Sun Bowl. Both events are free.

The Miners will sign autographs and take pictures with fans starting at 11 a.m. in the stadium concourse. Complimentary posters and pocket schedules will be given away while supplies last.

The State Farm Miner Powder Puff Expo and Lunch is a ladies-only event. Attendees can take pictures with coach Mike Price and Miner players at 11 a.m. in the concourse, in conjunction with Fan Appreciation Day. There’s an optional tour of UTEP football facilities at 11:30 a.m.

Then at noon, coach Price offers a colorful look at the game of football and this year’s Miner team in the Hall of Champions of the Larry K. Durham Sports Center. A complimentary lunch will be provided to the first 60 women who RSVP.

Registered attendees are eligible to win autographed prizes from UTEP Athletics and State Farm. To RSVP by Wednesday, Aug. 15, call (915) 747-8426 or email bea.Lich@imgworld.com.

Of course, football season tickets are still on sale this week. Prices start as low as $60 for youth general admission and $90 for adult general admission. It’s a great deal to see the Miners play Oklahoma, New Mexico State, SMU, Tulane, UCF and Rice. To order, call (915) 747-6150.

As always, thanks for your support. And go, Miners!
