UTEP grad installed
Willarda V. Edwards, a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, will be installed as the 110th president of the National Medical Association next week during the association's annual convention in Las Vegas.
Edwards, who graduated from UTEP in 1972 with a degree in Biology, says she will make health care equality a major focus of her presidency.
She has served as the national health advocacy director for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and as president of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. In 2007, she received the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust Award in Journalism.
New director
El Paso Water Utilities recently selected Mark Bolduc, former director of global operations for Northland Motor Technologies, as its new business and customer service manager. Bolduc replaces Luis Barajas who retired in June.
Bolduc has held executive management positions at companies such as Fox Technologies, Woodhead L.P., Woodhead de Mexico and Freus Inc.
Bolduc is a professor at the University of Phoenix. He is certified to teach classes in business, management, operations, project management and statistics.
Creative Kids donation
The Mt. Franklin Kiwanis recently presented local nonprofit Creative Kids with a check for almost $30,000 - part of the club's 5-year commitment to Creative Kids totaling $148,500.
By engaging its students in visual arts, culinary skills and graphic design, Creative Kids mentors over 700 youths throughout the year.
The Mt. Franklin Kiwanis grant supports a nurturing art program for the kids.
Distributor turns 100
Glazer's Distributors, a wholesale distributor of wine, spirits and malt beverage products, with an office in El Paso, is celebrating its 100th year in business.
The company has 13 branches across Texas, in addition to its corporate headquarters, and employs 2,600 people including more than 120 people in El Paso.
The company will celebrate its anniversary Tuesday at the Doubletree Hotel.
Fight homelessness
El Paso Rep. Silvestre Reyes recently announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will award almost $3.5 million to the City of El Paso to combat homelessness.
The funding, provided through the American Recovery Reinvestment Act, will help individuals and families facing a sudden financial crisis that could lead to homelessness.
Since February, over $550 million in federal funding from the American Recovery and Investment Act has been awarded or announced for the El Paso area.
Varay Systems
Patrick R. Holland, president and CEO of Varay Systems, recently announced that Andy Quintana was promoted to the position of controller. Quintana joined Varay Systems in 2007 as an accountant. Previously, he served as the food and beverage manager for Oasis Lanes and Amusement Center.
Del Sol
Del Sol Medical Center recently announced that Deborah Tappen has joined the hospital as administrative director of maternal/child services.
Tappen will oversee the management of patient care service and operations for obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, and neonatal intensive care services.
Tappen has over 20 years of nursing administration experience and is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She holds a bachelor's degree in Nursing from the University of South Carolina and master's degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
Nursing grant
U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes recently announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will award a $308,537 grant to UTEP to support training for nursing students.
The funds will be used to support the advancement of nursing education and practice. The purpose of the federal grant is to further the training and experience of advanced education nurses who are studying to serve as nurses.
MCAD grant
The City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department was recently awarded $100,000 by the National Endowment for the Arts to help retain jobs in the local arts sector.
The funding is part of the $50-million in stimulus allocated nationwide to nonprofit arts organizations through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The award represents one of the largest in Texas and the only one made to a municipal arts agency in the state.
Employees FCU
Ray Ponteri, president/CEO of El Paso Employees Federal Credit Union, recently announced the appointment of Linda Garretson to the position of vice president of mortgage lending.
Garretson is responsible for developing and managing a residential mortgage lending department to broaden the services provided by the credit union to its members.
Originally from El Paso, Garretson has over 25 years of experience in mortgage lending, including experience as vice president of mortgage lending for a credit union in New Mexico.
Texas Oncology
Maria Chona Aloba, a specialist in oncology and hematology, recently joined the cancer treatment team at Texas Oncology.
Aloba received her bachelor's degree in Biology and her doctor of medicine from the University of the Philippines in Manila. She is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
She will serve patients at the practice's El Paso locations at 7848 Gateway East and 1901 Grandview. Texas Oncology has cancer treatment facilities throughout Texas and southeastern New Mexico.
New PIO
UTEP recently named Arleene Barrios as its public information officer.
Barrios worked for over three years as a reporter for KFOX Channel 14. Her work was recognized several times by the Texas and New Mexico Associated Press and was nominated twice for the Lonestar Emmy Award.
Barrios earned a bachelor's degree in Telecommunications News from the University of Florida.
Nonprofit workshop
The Nonprofit Enterprise Center will host Sarahi Gross who will lead a workshop on effective human resources practices and policies that can help reduce staff turnover, increase office productivity and help prevent legal issues 4 p.m. Thursday at 1359 Lomaland.
Gross has 15 years of human resources experience. She received her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from UTEP.
The workshop is $75 for members and $100 for non-members and includes lunch.

Employment program
The County of El Paso and the El Paso Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center recently joined together to create a program to help individuals with mental illness get back into the workforce after a psychiatric episode.
Participants receive pre-employment job training, as well as assistance with uniforms, equipment and other job-related expenses.
Medical board
Muneer Assi was recently named to the Sierra Medical Center board of directors.
Assi is board certified in internal medicine and has practiced medicine for over 12 years. He received his training at the University of North Dallas Health Sciences Center in Fort Worth, Texas and completed his internship and residency at Richmond Heights General Hospital.
Go green
The U.S. Green Building Council's Chihuahuan Desert Chapter will present “Go Green in a Weekend - 48 Hours to Green your Home and your Life” 7:30 p.m. July 27 at the Main Downtown Library, 501 N. Oregon.
Mick Dalrymple, co-owner of Green Services and Green Environmental Building Supplies in Scottsdale, Ariz., will speak.

Address cancelled
The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce has cancelled this year's state of the district event, featuring the Ysleta Independent School District.
The chamber will hold the state of the military address, featuring Maj. Gen. Howard Bromberg, in September.
Security conference
U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes and UTEP President Diana Natalicio recently announced that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will participate in the 6th Annual Border Security Conference Aug. 10-11 at UTEP. The event is free and open to the public.
Other speakers include John Brennan, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism; Alan Bersin, assistant secretary for international affairs and special representative for border affairs; John Morton, assistant secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Kenneth Melson, director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; David Aguilar, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol; and Roger Garner, USAID mission director for Mexico.
Amigos luncheon
The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce's Amigos Committee will hold its monthly luncheon 11:30 a.m. Aug. 3 at the El Paso Club.

Government contracts
The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce will present a one-day workshop, “Proposal Planning, Analysis and Recovery,” 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 19 at the chamber's Center for Workforce Preparedness, 1359 Lomaland.
The workshop will assist small businesses in securing federal contracts.

Casino Royale
The American Cancer Society will host its 2nd annual Casino Royale Gala, which will take place 6 p.m.-noon Aug. 8, at Grace Gardens, 6709 Westside Dr.
The “Denim and Diamonds” themed event will feature live music, dinner, a cash bar, casino games and a silent and live auction. There will also be a raffle for a 2009 Hyundai automobile.
Tickets are $1,500 for high roller tables, $1,000 for full house tables and $100 for joker's wild tickets. The event supports the American Cancer Society.

'Keep on Dancing'
The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation is looking for vendors to participate in this year's “Keep on Dancing” cancer survivor conference that will be held Aug. 28-29 at the Marriott Hotel.
